Head of the Tasmeem bloc, MP Amer Al-Fayez, confirmed today, Wednesday, that the crisis of the parliament presidency is nearing an end, noting that Al-Mashhadani is the closest to the position of the council’s presidency.
Al-Fayez said in a statement to Al-Maalouma Agency, “The Sunni blocs have begun to unite and agree on a candidate currently according to the latest information that has reached us,” noting that “the presidency issue will be decided this week or next.”
He added that “Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani is the front-runner so far for the position of the parliament’s presidency, as he has received the support of the majority of Sunni forces,” explaining that “what is being said about amending the internal regulations to change the parliament’s presidency candidates is just media talk and is not related to official procedures within the council.”
He explained that “the continued delay in resolving this issue has greatly harmed the political and democratic process and entitlements, as required by political norms,” noting that “it is impossible to agree on a single candidate for the parliament presidency, as the law and constitution speak of competition between candidates for the position.”
In a previous statement to Al-Maalouma Agency, Member of Parliament Firas Al-Maslamawi suggested the possibility of amending the internal regulations of the House of Representatives to prevent reaching a political deadlock due to Sunni differences.
