The Iraqi Ministry of Communications announced, on Saturday, the provision of international Internet service “transit” with large capacities for the first time in its history.
Minister of Communications Hiyam Al-Yasiri said in a statement today, “We succeeded in passing international internet (transit) capacities and strengthening Iraq’s geographical position,” noting that more than (1000) gigabytes were passed for the first time in the ministry’s history.
Last March, the Opinion Board at the Ministry of Communications approved a new transit project linking Asia to Europe via Iraq, passing through Turkey, while another transit project linking Asia to Africa via Iraq, passing through Jordan, was discussed and approved.
At the time, the Minister of Communications, Hiyam Al-Yasiri, confirmed the “Iraqi government and the Ministry of Communications’ intention to benefit from Iraq’s strategic location and enter it on the official global map in a way that competes with communications traffic through other international corridors.”
