Member of the Investigation Committee into Corruption in Iraqi Ports, MP Alaa Al-Haidari, stressed today, Thursday, the need for the government to take bold decisions to protect public money in the ports.
Al-Haidari said in a statement to Al-Maalouma Agency, “The gains of many political parties made them ignore many corruption files, one of which is the corruption file in the General Ports Company,” indicating that “combating financial and administrative corruption in the ports is the most important step currently.”
He stressed the need to “take bold decisions to protect public money in the ports,” noting that “the Iraqi economy has been drained by the corrupt and neglect.”
He explained that “the financial return from the ports during the past few years is very little and does not achieve what is required due to the control of corrupt companies over it.”
Observers believe that what is happening in Iraqi ports is the biggest and most dangerous theft in Iraq. The fake projects and corruption that are happening in the ports are tying the government to paying huge sums of money and interest, even though they are an important economic resource for the country.
