India has taken a number of important steps over the past few days in trying to shake off the dollar’s dominance and strengthen its local currency’s global standing. It signed an agreement with the UAE that allows it to settle business transactions in rupees instead of US dollars.
Meanwhile, India and Indonesia intend to settle bilateral transactions in local currencies and connect their rapid payment systems, according to an Indian government official.India and the Emirates.
Industry and government sources said India and the UAE may announce the initiation of a rupee-for-dirham payment mechanism for bilateral trade settlement during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Abu Dhabi, which begins on Saturday.
The move reinforces India’s efforts to reduce transaction costs by reducing remittances in dollars.
The two countries also agreed – during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the UAE – to set up an instant payment mechanism to facilitate cross-border money transfers.
